Teeth Whitening

The practice of making your teeth brighter is not a modern invention. People have been attemping to change the color of their teeth since ancient times!!

According to the FDA, "whitening" restores the natural tooth color, whereas "bleaching" whitens beyond the natural tooth color. There are many different methods available to whiten one's teeth; brushing with "whitening" toothpastes, bleaching strips, bleaching pens, bleaching gels, and laser whitening are the most common. All of these methods use either Hydrogen Peroxide or Carbamide Peroxide as the bleaching agent. The concentration of the agent determines whether one needs their dentist to administer the material, or if, one can buy it at the store (over-the-counter). Teeth will whiten or bleach when the oxidizing agent of the peroxide penetrates the porosities in the enamel and dentin of the tooth and break down the stain deposits. Bleaching works best on extrinsic stains, which are the stains created by smoking, coffe, tea, red wine, dark sodas, berries, and other foods that we eat. Bleaching is less effective on intrinsic stains of the teeth like those caused from medications, or defects in the tooth's formation (white and brown spots).

Here at Dr's Lantner and Goldberg, we offer a number of diffrent options for our patient's teeth whitening needs. All of our bleaching products are ADA approved and presciption strength. This means that one cannot buy these products over-the -counter at the store. They have to be administered by a Dentist becuse they are stronger than the commercially available whiteners.
